“Intervention” (EXCLUSIVE) Interview with Iris C. M. Frank

-Who is Iris C. M. Frank?

I am an Austrian creative currently residing in Vienna. My journey into the world of storytelling began with a background in architecture, where I developed my creative and social skills. However, it was during a videography course in 2023 that I discovered my true passion for filmmaking. This realization led me to establish a collective of creative professionals dedicated to producing films and podcasts addressing mental health issues. You can explore our upcoming projects at www.inthistogether.at.

-What inspired you to become a filmmaker?

My inspiration to become a filmmaker stems from my unique perception of the world, shaped by my experience with Schizophrenia. Living with this condition has given me a distinctive lens through which I view stories and narratives. I feel a responsibility to portray mental health topics inclusively, challenging stereotypes and fostering understanding.

-Do you think the cinema can bring a change in the society?

Through ‘In This Together,’ we aspire to bring about change by leveraging the power of cinema. Our goal is to prompt critical reflection on the content viewers consume. In an age where social media and streaming services dominate, I advocate for intentional watching — choosing quality over quantity. Our films and podcasts aim to inspire empathy and initiate conversations about mental health, contributing to positive societal change.

-What would you change in the world?

If I could change one thing in the world, it would be erasing the stigma surrounding mental health. By dismantling misconceptions and fostering open conversations, we create a safer environment for individuals to accept their conditions and seek help without fear of judgment. Through ‘In This Together,’ I strive to actively contribute to this transformation by portraying mental health issues authentically and inclusively.

Where do you see the film industry going in the next 100 years?

Honestly, the trajectory of the film industry in the next century is uncertain, but I’m genuinely curious to witness and participate in its evolution. With rapid advancements in technology, we might see immersive experiences like virtual reality becoming integral to storytelling. Artificial intelligence could play a role in creative processes. The possibilities are vast, and I’m excited to embrace these changes as they unfold.
