Charlie Chaplin Project (EXCLUSIVE) Interview with Vicentini Gomez

-When did you discover Charlie Chaplin’s cinema?

Charlie Chaplin has always been an inexhaustible source of inspiration. I was still very young when I started studying mime, an art that inspired and shaped me profoundly. I have the privilege of being the second mime in the chronological order of Brazilian theater, and watching, reading and studying Carlitos was, for me, both a necessity and an artistic obligation. For almost two decades, I traveled all over Brazil, Europe and South America with my mime shows, winning several awards along the way. Chaplin and his iconic Carlitos were obligatory topics in the debates I took part in, always charged with passion and enchantment. He was a reference point in my artistic training and my enchantment with cinema and theater.

-Do you think that today Charlie Chaplin’s cinema can be understood by younger generations?

Charlie Chaplin’s cinema is certainly understood by new generations and continues to be admired and celebrated around the world. His language is classic, universal and timeless, capable of touching the hearts of any audience, regardless of the era. In his films, Chaplin addressed human issues with humor and sensitivity, creating works that transcend cultural and temporal barriers. His genius makes him universal and eternal.

-The pacifist monologue we can see in “The Great Dictator” is still very relevant today, as unfortunately, there are still many wars in the world. WILD FILMMAKER has a dream, which may remain only an utopia: our dream is to create Article 0 for all the constitutions in the world, in which to insert Chaplin’s pacifist monologue. Would you agree with this?

The monologue from The Great Dictator is, without a doubt, one of the most iconic and powerful scenes in the history of the seventh art, carrying a message that transcends time. Not only do I agree, but I would actively participate in a petition to create an “Article 0” in every constitution in the world, highlighting the phrase that most enchants me: ”More than machines, we need humanity. More than intelligence, we need affection and gentleness. Without these virtues, life will be violent and everything will be lost.”  This excerpt is the synthesis of a fairer world, where empathy and solidarity become the center of human relations. An act of hope and inspiration for future generations.

Charlie Chaplin was a revolutionary poet. How much has his art inspired you?

Chaplin was a visionary who saw the world with tenderness and daring, balancing the denunciation of injustice with the celebration of beauty. This mix of courage and sensitivity is an inspiration that I bring to each of my creations, whether acting, directing or writing. He showed us that humor is a transformative tool, capable of turning simplicity into an expression of genius. Chaplin proved that art, when done with truth, can change lives – and I’m an example of that.
